Exposed: The 2009 7 Series test mule

Nothing like the Nürburgring to bring out the best in the 2009 BMW 7 Series. The spy shooters from Inside Line caught Munich’s finest test drivers wringing out the next-generation 7 Series for all it was worth recently at Germany’s famed test track. Internally designated “F01,” the 2009 7 Series will ride on a new platform with slightly larger dimensions. A longer wheelbase will be the biggest change as BMW wants to keep the overall size of the 7 Series manageable. For those who don’t mind a little extra size, a slightly longer L-model version dubbed “F02″ will add 5.5 inches of overall length. A slightly wider track is likely to keep the proportions right.Â
Although it’s possible that this prototype is nothing more than an engineering test mule, don’t be surprised to see the new BMW flagship debut with sheet metal similar to the current version. Considering the heat that BMW took for the current 7’s controversial design, many are expecting wholesale styling changes. It’s not likely, however, as the 7 Series has remained a strong seller despite all the bad press. Slimmer headlights up front and a new taillight cluster in back will be the most noticeable alterations, while the greenhouse remains largely intact. The usual range of V8 and V12 engines will continue. The real news for this 7 Series, however, will be its optional alternative-fuel power plant. Given BMW’s participation in a hybrid development program with DaimlerChrysler and General Motors, it’s a good bet that the 2009 BMW 7 Series will offer the option of a gas-electric drivetrain similar to the one planned for the 2009 Mercedes Benz S-Class. By 2008, BMW might also have a diesel engine capable of meeting U.S. emission standards, so this could be part of the package as well.Â
With production slated to begin in late 2008, the 2009 BMW 7 Series should be headed for U.S. dealers by the spring of 2009. By Ed Hellwig, Senior Editor Edmunds Inside LineÂ
